For those unfamiliar, a new version of "Madden" is released every year with a new player on its cover. The most recentversion, Madden 22 featured players like quarterbacks Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. With each new version, new player ratings are released for real-life NFL players that can be played as in the game.

The auction held in January made nearly $5 million. That figure also includes the auction of other notable games.

A version of "Halo Combat Evolved" from 2001, for example, became the one of the first Xbox game to hit six figures, and was sold for $108,000. One of the original copies of the final production edition of "Super Mario Bros." in the 1980s sold for $186,000. Three games sealed included in "The Legend of Zelda" series sold for over $150,000.

The Super Mario Bros. game was the most expensive games ever made, when it was auctioned off to a buyer for $2 million, according to The Times.

Claflin University student Eric Minor has turned his passion for video games into an opportunity to participate in this year's Super Bowl.

Minor is a senior computer science major student from Suffolk, Virginia, advanced to the finals of the Madden NFL 22 x HBCU tournament. She will take on Rodney McKay of Virginia Union University. Both players are scheduled to be as guests on NFL Total Access to talk about their experience at the tournament. The show will air by the NFL Network Tuesday, Feb. 8, around 7 p.m.
